A Father's Day Poem
"My Back"
This is a spoken word from a child to his father...

When I was young I wanted nothing more than to know that my father had "My Back".

I actually didn't realize how often I would want or need nothing more than to know my father had "My Back" .

When I was young and I took my first few steps and was about to fall my father's strong hands grabbed me from "My Back".

When I was at the park being pushed on that swing I knew it was mommy back there.. I used to close my eyes and hope that when I opened them it was really my father  pushing me because I wanted nothing more than to known that my father had  "My Back".

As a little boy when I had that basketball in my hand and got air lifted so that I could reach the rim, I would always turn and see if it was my daddy that lifted me from "My Back".

Daddy thank you for not just being a child support payment but for loving me and having "My Back".

When I had nightmares I would run into my daddy's arms and he would say "Don't worry baby, daddy is here... My heartbeat would slow down and my fear would go away because my daddy had "My Back".

When I was being bullied at school, I knew they would keep bullying me if my daddy didn't show up and have "My Back".

When I was on my bike, it was always so hard to start pedaling from a stand still and then came the push to initiate my bike ride. I turned around and was hoping it was you - my daddy who pushed "My Back".

My father taught me to read. Some words I couldn't pronounce. My dad was strong and with his deep voice he would help me with new words. He had "My Back".

As a little girl I loved Mommy's advice about dating men.. But it's nothing like hearing the raw truth from my daddy who is a real man who understands men..  I have avoided many heartaches because my dad had  "My Back".

Here  I stand proudly with my chest poked out , throughout all of life's unexpected challenges, I kept my determination and focus and earned this cap and gown. A powerful moment, not only am I graduating school, I'm graduating in life. I look to my left and I see my mother. I look to my right and see my father. They both stand proudly with their hands on "My Back".

Here's my sincere SALUTE to all of the real FATHERS around the world...  Real fathers know that being a father is not just a day but it's a year round effort to love, embrace and just be there.

To all of the single mothers playing the role of mother and father God bless you!! Salute!!

Any man can make a baby, but it takes a real man to be a father.. If you are not involved in your kids' lives it's never too late.. Just remember it's only the kids who suffer in the end..  Any means necessary...  Do what you have to do to be more a part of your child's life...

President Obama has created the new standards in black fatherhood and removed any excuse a man could have of being too busy to be involved and/or make time to be there as a father...

Happy Father's Day...

  1. oh wow, this brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately both of my daughters are now grown, never really had that bond with their fathers, but your right, it's never too late. At 22 and 19, I often think about how their lives would've been so different if they had been there. I did the best I could, and continue to be their rock. Thank you for posting this, love it...Cindy

    2. I am speechless. It brings back so many memories. Yet it leaves room for those of us who never had that...for wishful thinking. This is more than a poem. It's a motivational speech from a real father's prospective who can relate to the words that pour from your heart. I'm happy for you and I'm thankful that your poem gives voice to what so many of us think but never say. I salute you for touching that place in my heart that I so often hide from the rest of the world. God bless you and Happy King's day. You deserve it.

That was truly poetic talent of a real and Loving Man. I must say im quite young at 18 bit im old enough to see and understand there are not that many real Men in the world. Especially those that are Fathers :). Anyone can be a Dad but it takes much more to be a Real Father.

God bless you Tyrese and the works that u bring and show ppl. God bless your Daughter and the rest of your family and loved ones too :).

  55. Beautiful poem, Tyrese! I immediately thought about mothers who are taking on the responsibility of a father...and how it must make them feel today to know that they're in it alone. I hate thinking about children who are missing their fathers on today due to tragedy or the lack of responsibility for their children. However, God is always there and I pray that He grants fathers the wisdom to know that if they are not in their children's lives, to have the mind to become real men as they were called in the beginning!

    Happy Father's Day, Tyrese!

  64. Tyrese, those words were very moving. Being a single mother of 5 there isn't a lot of time to really think about how hard it is to play the roles of both mother & father, you just do it. Having a father in your life as a child is huge & it's very unfortunate that a lot of men don't realize that. Happy Father's Day to the real fathers, the men who step in & mentor those children with absent fathers, to the mothers that work hard everyday to be mom & dad and Happy Father's Day to you Tyrese. Thank you for sharing those powerful words.

    1. #YourMemoryForeverLivesOn ***Happy Father's Day Daddy ;-)*** & To My FATHER GOD, I Thank YOU Continually For Being The GREATEST FATHER A Daughter Could Ever Have! Happy FATHER'S Day!

I AM SO VERY THANKFUL For The Time I Had To Get To Know My Father, as I did not grow up with both parents. I recall the COUNTLESS years of longing for my father.... Visits here and there were never enough, nor was a stepfather ever a replacement... The countless tears I cried, prayers I prayed, wishing hoping...my father could be there to have "My Back".... But I was DETERMINED that one day I would get to know my father as more than just an occasional visitor.

Determined, one break during college, I did the "unthinkable". Against my mother's wishes (though I did have the permission of my then stepfather), I did not come home for break. This angered my mother and hurt her deeply as I was always one to please mother. I was also hurting because I'd hurt her. However, this time I'd made a choice to stand for what I believed I should do regardless of the fact I'd stand so alone. During that break I spent 2 weeks at my father's house getting to know him. And I am FOREVER GRATEFUL to GOD I did, as that one act that was initially seen as disobedience turned out to be a divine appointment. Those 2 weeks were the GREATEST moments spent with my father, and they were my last. After break I returned home. I recall getting a phone call.... The voice on the other end was of one clearly in tears. It was my father's fiancée. And with all the strength she could muster up at that time, she informed me that my father had beeen rushed to the hospital, he was coughing up blood yet fighting to live... They told him to stop fighting, and he passed on.

My father never got to see me graduate Summa Cum Laude 3rd in my class with a 3.8GPA, but he recall him being so proud of me during my time spent with him, boasting on how he knew I would go on to excel. My father never got to attend my wedding, but during the visit he got to meet the man I'd go on to marry, and he assured me of how much he loved him and approved of him. My father never got to see the birth of our 4 BEAUTIFUL babies (2 boys and 2 girls), but as each one looked just like him at birth ;-), causing me to feel, though abscent in body, he never "missed a beat".

I will never forget the impact that a simple act of stepping out and going "against the grain" to do what I believed in has made in my life. We only have one life to live.... With each day, I am the "go to girl" to be inspired.... With each day, I'm impacting the lives of another in some form. That is true living! That hat being said, I'll leave you with this: It doesn't matter how you start, but how you finish! The possibilities are ENDLESS!!! Make it a PHENOMENAL one!

      Much love & success!!!

    2. CORRECTION

It was only in awaking this morning and reflecting on the time I was blessed to be able to spend with my father, that I realized that it was not when I returned home from that break that he passed, but shortly after I returned home AFTER having graduated. Thus at some point during the following school year, though all cloudy now, I did see him again, as this morning I recall the settings for each encounter (visit in this case) being different. One in his old home, the other in his new home. It was during the visit to his new home I'd learned that he was ill.... At the time of graduation, though family did not make it known to me, an attempt to sheild me I'm sure, as I was looking for him at graduation, he was most likely too ill to make the trip. It was after seeing him my senoir year in college fhat I would never see him again.

My daughters are 21 and 12 and he is not a father to them at all. He was a half ass daddy to the older one and absolutely nothing to the younger one. Doesn't call her, take her anywhere, buy her anything, he's a loser and the sad things is, he doesn't realize that his actions are not hurting me, it hurts her. I hope there comes a time when he needs something like a kidney and she's the only one who can give it because he will die if it I have any breath in my body!

There is nothing to hard for God to do and looking at Tyreses life God still remains in control. 15 years in a music and film industry has blossomed you and continues to shape your humanity, and after reading this, it immediately brought me to the section in your book where you are speaking with your mother. Been reading these stories. Some are catching stories. Like the one of Ra Chell, its never too late to get to know that father or the story behind the absence of your father. Iam gratefull that mine at least tried to be part of my life and showed that in evrey way possible.
Like it that you set the example for fathers that they can be fathers if they put there mind to it.
Keep talking to those fathers and mothers because you motivate them to do better and be better. They hear you when you speak you cant always see that but there are ppl out there listening to what you have to say and think about that even talking about it to others.
STAY a great father for your daughter Shayla because no one needs and loves you more than she does!!

  91. Wow! Mr. Gibson, I have been following u on twitter and mobli for a few months now and some of the stuff that u have written or spoken I have found fault in. Why? Because it has always seem that u spoke from one pov...a mans. But this Father's Day poem has been captured from both pov's (male/female & parent/child). On this I must say, "Well done! U really have out done urself in this poem." I thought it was the most touching and beautiful piece of poetry that I have read in a long time. Great job on this poem! I definitely have to share this with everyone that I know.

My twitter name is mocha2523 or sandra2523@me.com

Once again, awesome job on putting ur thoughts and feelings on paper!!

  92. A child needing its father defined in your poem. Not only the child needs its father but the father needs the child too. Ones the child has entered the fathers life, he can never erase that part. Sometimes we think that when a person is not in someones life they are forgotten. There is no way that certain part in anyones life can be forgotten. Often kids who dont have a father in their life think that their father forgot all about them. Well the truth is that man thinks about them wheter he see the kid or not. So its not only the child that suffers in the end but also the parent that can not be or is not a part of this childs life. There are a lot of fathers out there who cant be a part of a childs life because of problems with their baby mother keeping them away from having contact with their own kids. So sometimes the choice of a father being a part of a childs life are is being made by a child mother. So fathers when you make that choice to go bed with anyone keep in mind that that woman can keep you from seeing your child when you separate or will give you problems when you want to spent time with your child. We are al responsable for the choices we make befor having sex with anyone. Nobody starts a relationship to end up divorced or separated specially when you have kids. There is no garantee on any relationship to last till the end.But you can do something about the choice you make to sleep with somebody. Because its you, the father of your kids, and your kids that will suffer in the end.
Tyrese talks about this subject because there are a lot of ppl out there who are single parents with children
Kids suffer Fathers suffer and Mothers suffer. Maybe there should to be a school to guide and educate the young future to be mothers and fathers to help them make the right choices in life. Its starts with the choice of having sex. Having sex is more that a act of love or lust. It can and will decide your future and the future of your child so think about that before you decide to have sex.

  93. That’s awesome...thanks a lot for bringing this up. Sometimes we really get busy or ignorant to notice the important of having a Father figure in our life. I was raised by my mother who tried her best to have my back by teaching me life and to stand up for what I believed in. Now I’m blessed with a son who's almost five years now and I can stand up proudly to say "I’m a father raising a soldier". Thanks to my fiancĂ©e for affording me an opportunity to play my role as a father. My proudest moment was when he woke up in the middle of the night and called baba (Father) that’s when I got the confirmation that he knows that I got his back all the time. Trully love your poem Tyresse and God bless.

  97. it's becoming very common place, where a man wants to be a father, is desparate to be a daddy, wants to be there for their little girl.

but the mother prevents it- the courts prevent it- the system prevents it.

sad but a true fact of modern western life.

i never saw my baby girl for nearly a year, i cried every night, i watched her videos everyday.

Men ARE NOT JUST A cash machine- the child needs their dad- stop this madness
